April 2009 "Hot Button" Survey Results
Our latest survey asked you which coaching techniques have you used successfully.
Product managers regularly build trust, and invest the time to provide feedback to team members, help team members build new skills, and clarify how each team member can support product goals.
Coaching is a great technique to deal with the "all the responsibility, no authority" nature of product management.
What other techniques have you used successfully? "Ask the one being coached for feedback on yourself," suggests one PM. Another proposes "listening without solving."
"Coaching is a rewarding experience and is critical to moving a team from mediocre to great," notes a survey respondent. "I love telling my team that we are mutual coaches and I ask them to provide feedback to me so they start feeling accountable for leading, too."
